I want to build a forum, but I am a novice. I%26#039;m looking for something very affordable, but I don%26#039;t want to sacrifice reliability or limit my data transfer capabilities too much. I am not sure what the problem is you have with there service, but the fact remains they are the best.

Sitebuilder in fact can save you around a $1,000 dollars alone in software. Not to mention that I have used them for 8 years and have never had an issue with them or there service in any way.

The only time I ever had any issue with them was when I did something dumb like forgetting to SAVE. or SAVE AS. or PUBLISHING the site. So the problem was with me not there service.

They are the most reliable one I have ever found.

i was thing of using my colocated server to start hosting websites and was wondering realistically how much disk space i would need to service 100 customers , they accounts would be basically unmetered and would have %26quot;unlimted%26quot; disk space ...what do you guy reckon i would need realistically?
What would you say the average web hosting account would use in terms of disk space +usage?
To make an educated guess, we can say there would be 100 users all using at least 100 MB of disk space. That would give you a 100*100=10,000 MB (10G) at least. Add your website code and data, which may be around 50 to 100M in itself (depending upon how %26#039;cool%26#039; you want it to look) and add some buffer space, so you are looking at somewhere around 20G to begin with...

This might not be consistent with what you require and you may need to change, but this will give you a good starting point...

basically what happens is they partition their servers into virtual machines, so what you get is a completely dedicated hosting environment. You can change anything, install anything, create your own users etc, just as if you installed your own server.

So yes, you can change your php.ini or your settings for MySQL. it%26#039;s all up to you cos it%26#039;s YOUR environment.

How do I move a nonpublished web site from one hosting company to another? I am doing a web site for a friend

...who initially set his site up under SiteDelux, which is one of the clunkiest do-it-yourself sites I have seen, design-wise. He has registered his domain, but I am in the dark as to how to move it to a %26quot;better%26quot; hosting/design service. My friend is very unweb-savvy, so I want to just be able to do it for him. Well, transferring the DOMAIN is easy. A reputable hosting service will walk you through it step-by-step.

Transferring the actual site is an entirely different monster...

You need the files from the original site. If the original site it is hosted on let him build it himself, he will need to download all of the files from the FTP server on the old host, and upload them to the new host.

Now...

If he built it on a site that does not give him FTP access (such as a free hosting service), he%26#039;s up a creek, sans paddle. Time to start from scratch. Good news though: Reputable hosts offer tools for the novice site builder. Bluehost.com is one of the best hosts out there for a low to medium grade website.

You need to be sure that the facilities that are being used by the website on the old host are available on the new one, or equivalent ones that don%26#039;t take too much trouble to swap over to.

You need to find out the login for ftp on the old host, and also on the new host.

Then log in with an ftp client and download all the files to a folder on your computer somewhere.

Then login to the new host with the ftp client and upload the files to there.

There are a number of free ftp clients available online, just google %26quot;free ftp%26quot;

If you are not allowed to use ftp on the old host, all is not lost. I guess there are probably only a very few actual pages on the site, so you can get the code like this:

Open each page in a browser (like Firefox or Internet Explorer), then select View - Source from the bar at the top of the browser. The html code will come up in a notepad window. Just save it to a folder on your computer, giving it the appropriate name (index.html or whatever). If it IS a free host, you will find some extra stuff in the file that puts their ads up, so you need to take that out before uploading it to the new host.

If you haven%26#039;t found a host yet, i recommend http://www.okget.info/dh which is pretty cheap and gives you huge amounts of space, masses of free facilities including one click installs, and has friendly helpful staff.

To move the actual domain name, so it%26#039;s pointing to the new host, go to the registrar where you bought the domain and find where it says to change name servers. Change the nameservers to the ones given to you in the welcome email from the new host.

Reply:First off connect to his current web host and FTP down all the files and folders to a local folder on your pc.

After choosing a new web host you will be given instructions to FTP your files up to the new host. You will use your FTP program to copy the files from your local copy to the web server.

Then it is a matter of changing the DNS settings for the domain name from the old to the new settings. These settings are always changed from the Registrar account for the domain name. If you do not know who the registrar is you can do a whois query on the domain name to find out at any of the major registrars like godaddy. Sometimes it is done by clicking like you want to make an offer on the currently registered domain name others it is not.

He needs:

- Some static pages hosted with bit of content

- Bonus points if the hoster offers design services or self service site building tools

- Support for credit card transactions so that customers to pay for rides online

Has anyone else had problems with a hosting provider called I-websolutions? My website was not viewable sometimes for weeks on end, even though it had been working for a couple of days once I registered. Multiple tickets had been raised, frontpage extensions was reinstalled loads of times etc

I complained because of this, and got abused by their customer services department, I managed to get ones month refund, which wasnt the full amount. And now they wont let me transfer my domain name away from them (I had been with them for other 90days)

Firstly their front page specificies that on all of their packages there is NO minimum contract period, so they can%26#039;t try blagging you that there is a 12 month agreement or anything like that. Thirdly and most importantly from your point of view, THEY CANNOT REFUSE TO TRANSFER YOUR DOMAIN NAME. My advice would be to go to http://uk2.net and transfer your domain asap, they also offer excellent monthly or annual hosting packages. I have been using UK2.net for the past 5 years and have NEVER had cause to complain, currently they are hosting 6 websites for me and they hold 15 domain names I have registered. If I-Websolutions continue to give you grief, may I suggest that you contact BBC Watchdog, and threaten them with this, as well as with the press. Does anyone know of a good mysql hosting service? One which gives everyone access to the database through a website or through microsoft access front ends?

I have a mysql database already set up on line, but unfortunately only I can only access it through localhost through phpadmin...(i was told that that is the only way my web host will give access - because of bandwidth issues).

What I was hoping for was a hosting company that serves the database, not through localhost - but through full unlimited access - so I can use it properly (through custom interfaces) and exploit the full power of mysql.

Several sites offer a free membership with just the basics. Each will tell you how much you can store/save. You don%26#039;t pay per page just for the general package. The more %26quot;bells and whistles%26quot; the more you pay. Domain names sometimes come with the package, sometimes not. For beginners I recommend either Geocities (Yahoo) or Tripod.

When I was learning I found Tripod to be the easiest. Go to both sites and research, or sign-up on both and try out each.

I%26#039;m kind of partial to CPanel, because I host a lot of domains for friends and co-workers and CPanel makes it easy to create accounts for them so they can each administer their own domain (but can%26#039;t do anything to mine). Also, it%26#039;s pretty easy to back up any CPanel-administered domain and move it over to a different CPanel-based hosting provider.

I%26#039;m a pretty technical guy, but I%26#039;m looking for a reliable web host for multiple domains that some will use databases. You need IIS. ASP is not something that is installed. The ability to process ASP scripts comes with IIS.

Well, there are some linux servers that have intalled an ASP processor called Chili-Soft ASP. But if you developed the code in Visual Web Dev, you are best off with a windows server. If it%26#039;s .NET (as opposed to classic ASP), make sure the host has .NET framework installed.

Hi, I%26#039;m a Small business customer...its been a day and I still cant view Web hosting Control Panel. Why would that be? I tried with different browsers, different computers, and even my friend couldnt access it and he is in another city.

yesterday when I was uploading pictures to my gallery with FTP, suddenly the connection got cut off saying i had the wrong password and username combination. Then I got the error %26quot;500 Internal Server Error%26quot; when I visited the gallery and the forum of my site. I tried to access the web hosting control panel but I couldn%26#039;t. It%26#039;s been a day and I still can%26#039;t view the panel. I can view my e-mail and domain control panel but not the web hosting one.

I also cant access phpmyadmin. It says there is an internal server error.

I am thinking it has to do with a problem in the mysql database. But since I can not view anything i dont know what the actual problem is. So I dont know how to solve this. customer service didnt even send a reply. can anyone help me

If I can not cancel a web hosting account, am I liable?

A long time ago, I created a web hosting account. The host was horrible - they never responded to emails, and their servers were always down.

I emailed them several times saying that I wanted to cancel my service. They ignored the emails. Eventually the credit card I was using to pay expired, and I figured when the billing was rejected, they%26#039;d automatically cancel the service.

A few months ago, I found out the site was still online, and it is running up a tab for my %26quot;hosting%26quot;.

I asked this before, and was told to just keep a copy of the emails I sent asking to cancel. The problem is, this was soo long ago I do not have any copies of the emails available.

I also looked up an address for this %26quot;company%26quot;, but found the address to lead to a yard care business.

About two weeks ago, their site seemed to have went down for good. Trying to access the site just comes up with a page unavailable message.

Since I had no way to contact them, am I in any way liable for the unpaid hosting?
If I can not cancel a web hosting account, am I liable?

You can use sub domains for the additional domain names. So if your main site is yahoo.com and your other domain name is answers.com you can make a subdomain of yahoo.com which would be answers.yahoo.com and point the second domain name at that.

Okay, a second try and now it seems to work. A quick check of WHOIS shows the site registed to Boling Jiang in Overland Park, Kansas. Not sure what his business model is, but it sure seems like a very good offer. But you know what they say about things that seem too good to be true...

Back again with another edit... I noticed several typos on their home page, and slow response in clicking on links. The forum wouldn%26#039;t open and their FAQ link returned an error. The bottom paragraph says, %26quot;So What%26#039;s the Catch?

There are no legitimate sites that give away free domain names. However, there are sites that offer free domain hosting, but most likely you%26#039;ll have restrictions. (Ads, etc.)

If you%26#039;re a starter, it%26#039;s best just to settle on a freeserver like Geocities or Freewebs until you can purchase your own domain name. In my opinion, I don%26#039;t think a person should own a domain unless they can make their own graphics, code their own html/whatever, and learn how to use a FTP program.

The reason I%26#039;m asking is because I am in charge of building a website for a clan in an online game I play. Because the traffic of the site will depend on the growth of the clan, as well as how many members are willing to take part in the site, I DO NOT wish to pay for a site until I know it will be a worthwhile investment.

However the site does need to run well and be available for whatever traffic it gets, at least until it gets sizeable; and oversellers tend to pull their services long before the limits they promise are reached. Any suggestions?

(I will also take advice on paid services, if you note them to be such, as I may need one in the future, but I am specifically looking for a free host right now..)

I%26#039;ve searched Yahoo re: web hosting, all I can find are links to Yahoo Small Business. I%26#039;m not running a business, I only want to host a few web pages and be able to share photos (via linking) on various servers.

My experience with Yahoo%26#039;s Geocities is that it doesn%26#039;t allow remote linking. Can I migrate the web pages I have on Earthlink (my old ISP) to my att.net or Yahoo accounts? Is there some other Yahoo service that allows some free hosting space, enough to construct a few pages and that allows remote linking?

With about 15 visits per day, there really isn%26#039;t much to consider. You could choose the cheapest hosting package there is. However, if you%26#039;re going to use a database in your site, it will be a little more expensive.

Personally I would use PHP, not ASP, but that%26#039;s just me.

Reply:Hiya, just saw this post in passing. There are really 2 main factors for a first time website:

What will be on your website: A simple page (0.1MB-1MB) or a more intensive site which you want to allow people to download stuff from e.g. menus, price lists, photos.. (1MB-100MB+)

The sky is the limit in terms of how much you put on there and many services offer storage amounts of 50MB up to Unlimited although cost does obviously vary.

How many people will visit: Who are you giving your address to, if you are only passing it out on business cards or to existing customers/friends then you won%26#039;t be having many visitors (as you say 15 hits a day..).

What you need to take into consideration here is how much stuff is on your site then multiply this by the number of people that are going to visit it.

E.g. If I have a simple site which is 100KB (0.1MB) and expect 15 people a day then I will use:

0.1MB x 15 people x 30 days = 45Mb a month of traffic. Typically from experience if sites don%26#039;t get much traffic then they won%26#039;t need much bandwidth, unless your site is being seriously promoted you shouldn%26#039;t expect too much.

In terms of who can you use to host, at the cheap end of the UK market: Purple Cloud www.purplecloud.com do really cheap low volume hosting, I pay about 拢10 a year, and have not noticed any downtime.

At the more expensive end someone like Fast Hosts (http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/hosting/) will charge from around 拢50 a year.

If none of this works for you, just make a blog instead of a website. They function just as well with lots of customization capabilities, navigation and SO much more. i set up a domain and it is darkapec.com (if you wanted to check it out). the problem is it is with Office Live and they only allow 500mb of storage on the Basic account. i talked to some other educated people and they said IIS could host the website (internet information services) i have got a redirection to work (and that is http://75.100.152.208:1500/tsweb/), but i dont know how to set it up to host the websites files. (i dont want to use any other service to host my website) so if you know a program that i can use to use MY computer to host stuff on my site or a way to setup IIS to host the site that would be great.

If you use XP pro you can use IIS to host it, though it will limit you to 2 or 3 users at a time. XP Home won%26#039;t support it. You could use Apache though (apache can run on windows too) and not be limited by users. You%26#039;ll want to research what all you want to do with the site and decide if you need microsoft based or not.

If you use IIS, all you need to do from there is start the Default web site, put your files in c:\inetpub\wwwroot, and be sure if you%26#039;re running a router or firewall that port 80 is opened and reaching your server.

How can I use javascript to scan a local directory and display the files in the browser as if it were really a directory listings page? I could manually make a directory listings page but I would like something that would automatically update itself when new files are added to the directory. I%26#039;m using a free web hosting service for a current project and would very much like the directory listings page but the host does not allow PHP. Please do not suggest other hosts or to manually make the page. If you can tell me how to use javascript to complete this task, please let me know. Thanks!

There is no way to %26quot;read%26quot; a directory using javascript. You can%26#039;t even read a file with javascript. I wish you could.

Do you mean a directory on the server? Just don%26#039;t put an index.html file or anthing else that would be displayed by default, and make a link to the directory, ie: http://your.server.tld/filedirectory/

If you mean on the user%26#039;s computer, there should be no way unless the browser has a security bug.
Reply:javascript runs on the local client computer and not the web server, therefore will only be able to view local files. To view files on the web server, you need a server side script such as asp,php, asp.net etc. I don%26#039;t think there is a way around this one. You can try to enable directory browsing for a folder, disable default pages (index.htm etc), then have a page in another folder show the contents of the browsible folder in a frame or iframe.

I built a web site with the yahoo site builder, signed up for Geo Cities Pro, and I received an email confirming my purchase, and another stating that my domain had been activated. So I went to my site builder, clicked publish site and I get a message that says I have to sign up for a web hosting service or merchants solution account before I can publish my page. I tried publishing it with front page. That didn%26#039;t help any. What am I doing wrong here??? any help??

I have designed a 1-page advertisement for my business, and I want to post it on the internet as my web page.

How do I go about this? I don%26#039;t have much experience with HTML or anything. Is there a web-hosting service (preferably free, but I%26#039;d be willing to pay a small fee) that I can use to just upload my entire page?

The phone techs are easily available and pleasant to deal with. I got a 2 year rate of $118 (payable up front) but think its gone up a little since then. If you google for the top ten servers, you can choose from similar hosting services. Or you can publish a small personal website through msn which is free. I am looking for a web hosting service to host a website for a business that will be quite MySQL heavy. I use Bluehost and they%26#039;re better than anything else I%26#039;ve seen.
